Parenting Coach (non-clinical)

“I view therapy as a journey that I travel with my clients in the process of improving their lives, moving in the direction that they choose. I practice in a client-centered manner, meaning I assist clients in identifying their own goals and then help them follow the path that they choose.”

“Parent coaching groups provide a safe and supportive environment in which to learn information, skills, and strategies you can use to increase your confidence in parenting and improve your relationship with your child(ren). Engaging in the group format alongside other parents can increase your learning as well as your sense of community in doing the tough but incredibly important work of parenting. ”

Therapy

I provide therapy services for ADHD, anxiety, gender and identity struggles, social interaction difficulties, depression, behavioral challenges, and issues regarding adjustment to life changes. I work with children (ages 4+), adolescents, and adults. People do not exist in a vacuum; when ever possible and appropriate I encourage involving members of my client’s support network (family or otherwise) in the therapy process to facilitate meaningful and long-lasting change.

Theoretical orientation:

My approach to therapy draws from a number of theoretical orientations, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), attachment theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, collaborative and proactive solutions (CPS), emotionally focused therapy, solution focused therapy, exposure therapy, parts work, family systems theory, strategies from play therapy, and positive parenting approaches. I provide affirming services to my clients, and my work is strongly influenced by social justice considerations.

Coaching

I provide coaching services to parents through a virtual parenting group format.

I currently offer two different parenting groups through the coaching model: one specifically for parents of children recently diagnosed with ADHD, and the other for any/all parents who are hoping to shift their parenting style to a more positive, collaborative approach while enhancing the parent-child relationship.

I also provide individual parent coaching services both online and in person.

Coaching vs Therapy

Coaching differs from therapy in several ways. Coaching is non-clinical anod not considered healthcare so does not fall under the rules or protections of healthcare services. Therapy is healthcare and is clinical; it includes assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental illness. Go here to learn more about coaching.

Education and Experience

I earned my Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University in Honolulu HI and my Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Portland in Portland OR.  I have been licensed since 2011 - I am currently licensed in Washington and Oregon and was previously licensed in Hawaii.  Prior to earning my Master's Degree, I worked with autistic children and adolescents and provided parent coaching services.  In my internship I worked with individuals diagnosed with HIV or AIDS.  I have provided therapy services: in schools, on military bases (with adults and children) in the U.S. and overseas, at a non-profit agency, and in group practice. I enjoy consulting and working with pediatric doctors, recognizing the interconnectedness of mental and physical health and well-being.

I also enjoy providing consultation and training to staff and admin at schools, child care centers, and more.

I am an approved supervisor in Washington State, which means I am able to provide pre-licensure supervision to WA counselors and therapists who are working toward full licensure in this state.
